In March 1993 the Kinks were invited to appear on a popular
French cable television show to promote the single'Only A Dream'.
It proved to be an 'eventful' trip for me but the end
result justified the means...
All artists appearing on the show played live so I was asked to carry over Ray's proteus*
synth' that was used on the 'Phobia' album to recreate all the sounds on the record. When we eventually arrived at the studio
I discovered that it had taken a bang in the luggage rack on the flight over and wasn't working ! Suitably scolded I spotted
another keyboard there just like mine that I could use. That's when I realised my disk with all the sounds on was back at
the hotel. One of our drivers offered to take me back to get it. "Tres Vite" I said as we set off. It ended up being the scariest
drive of my life. We literally flew there and back dodging in and out of cars, through red lights. You name it, the driver
did it.
The original plan was to perform 'Only A Dream and then play 'Sunny Afternoon' which was a #1 hit the week England
won the World Cup back in 1966.
Both songs were received really well by the studio audience and the presenter went to
continue with the rest of the show..
The next thing I knew, Dave hit the opening chords of 'You Really Got Me'. The audience
went wild and we launched into a fantastic, electrifying version of the song. I am so glad I have a video copy of that performance
as it was completely spontaneous and a classic moment of rock music on film
Also on the show was Yanick Noah the French
tennis champion who had done some recordings. I remember talking to him in a slow, loud voice the way the English do to people
who they think can't understand them. "Are you enjoying making records" I yelled. His answer was spoken in perfect, fluent
English learnt over many years playing tennis on the US tour.
Yanick went on to win the Davis Cup for France and had a
few hit records in France as well. I went on to play with the Rubettes who also had quite a few hits in France but every now
and then I get the Tara Ta Ta video out and reminisce about a fantastic day in Paris.

Pour moi, ce voyage fut "riche en événements" mais le résultat final justifia les moyens....
Tous
les artistes apparaissant dans le show chantèrent en "live", on m'a donc demandé d'apporter la synthé de Ray qui avait été
utilisée sur l'album "Phobia" pour recréer tous les sons se trouvant sur le disque.
Quand nous sommes finalement arrivés
au studio, j'ai découvert qu'elle avait reçu un coup dans le porte-bagages et qu'elle ne fonctionnait pas. Peu importe. Il
y avait là un autre piano qui ressemblait au mien et que je pourrais utiliser. C'est à ce moment que je me suis rendu compte
que mon disque sur lequel se trouvait tous les sons était resté à l'hôtel. L'un de nos conducteurs me proposa de m'y reconduire
pour le chercher. Je lui ai dit "très vite" en montant dans la voiture. Ce fut le trajet le plus effrayant de ma vie. Nous
avons littéralement volé à l'aller et au retour, esquivant ici et là des voitures, grillant des feux rouges. Je l'ai ordonné,
le conducteur l'a fait.
Le plan initial était de chanter "Only A Dream" puis "Sunny Afternoon" qui était numéro 1 dans
les hitparades durant la semaine où l'Angleterre reconquit la World Cup gagnée en 1966.
Les deux chansons furent vraiment
bien acceptées par l'auditoire du studio et le présentateur continua avec le reste du show.
La chose suivante dont je
me souviens c'est Ray jouant sur "You Really Got Me". L'auditoire devint fou et nous nous sommes lancés dans une fantastique
et électrisante version de la chanson.
Je suis très heureux d'avoir une copie vidéo de cette performance parce que ce
fut un moment de rock musique tout à fait spontané et classique.
Il y avait aussi, durant le show, Yannick Noah, le champion
de tennis français, qui avait fait quelques disques. Je me souviens lui avoir parlé d'une voix lente et forte, comme le font
les Anglais avec les gens dont ils pensent qu'ils ne les comprennent pas. J'ai hurlé "aimez-vous faire des disques". Sa réponse
me fut donnée dans un anglais parfait et courant, appris au cours de ses nombreux tournois américains.
Yannick gagna la
Coupe Davis pour la France et ce fut aussi en France que ses disques remportèrent quelques succès. Puis j'ai continué à jouer
avec les Rubettes qui avaient eux aussi quelques hits en France, mais de temps en temps je regarde la cassette vidéo de Taratata
et je me souviens d'une journée fantastique passée à Paris.

an einer französischen Fernsehsendung teilzunehmen, um ihr single "Only A Dream" zu beförden. Für mich war diese Reise "reich
an Ereignisse" aber das Endergebniss rechtfertigte die Mittel...
Alle Künstler, die in der Show erscheinen, sangen
dort "live", man hat mich also gebeten, das Klavier von Ray zu bringen, das auf dem Album "Phobia" benutzt gewesen war, um
alle Töne zu rekonstruieren, die sich auf der Platte befinden. Als wir schließlich ins Studio angekommen sind, habe ich entdekt,
daß es einen Schlag im Gepäckträger bekommen hatte und daß es nicht funktionnierte. Machte nichts. Es gab da ein anderes Klavier,
das meinem ähnlich war und das ich benutzen könnte. In diesem Moment, ist mir klargeworden, daß meine Platte, auf der sich
alle Töne befanden, in dem Hotel geblieben war. Einer von unseren Fahrern schlug mir vor, mich dort zurück zubringen, um sie
zu suchen. Als ich ins Auto einsteigte, habe ich ihm "Très Vite" gesagt. Es war die schrecklichste Strecke meines Lebens.
Wir sind auf der Hinreise und auf dem Rückweg geflogen. Ich habe ihn geordnet, der Fahrer hat es gemacht. Der Anfangsplan
war "Only A Dream" zu singen, dann "Sunny Afternoon", das Nummer 1 in den Hitparaden war, während der Woche wo England die
World Cup zurückeroberte, die sie 1966 gewonnen hatte. Die zwei Lieder waren vom Auditorium des Studios wirklich sehr gut
angenommen und die show ging mit dem Rest weiter.
Die Folgende Sache, an die ich mich erinnere, ist Ray der auf "You Really
Got Me" spielte. Das Auditorium wurde verrückt und wir haben uns in eine phantastische Version des Liedes gestürtz.
Ich
bin sehr glücklich, eine Videokopie von dieser Leistung zu haben, weil es ein spontan und klassischer Moment von Rock Musik
war.
Da war auch, während der Show, Yannick Noah, der Meister des französischen Tennis Spiel, der einige Platten gemacht
hatte. Ich erinnere mich, mit ihm mit einer langsame und starke Stimme gesprochen zu haben, wie es die Engländer mit den Leuten
machen, von denen sie denken, daß sie sie nicht verstehen. Ich habe gebrüllt "machen Sie gern Platten". Er gab mir Antwort
in einer perfekte englisher Sprache.
Yannick gewann die Davis Cup für Frankreich und in diesem Land hatte er auch etwas
Erfolg mit seine Platten. Dann spielte ich weiter mit den Rubettes, die auch einige hits in Frankreich hatten, aber von Zeit
zu Zeit, schaue ich mir die Videokassette von Taratata an und ich erinnere mich an einen phantastischen Tag, den ich in Paris
verbracht habe.
