It's understandable that people miss the comforts of home while touring abroad. Try getting a decent cup of tea for starters ! My keyboard technician Colin Burns hit upon a novel solution to keep up morale. He set up a tea room at the side of the stage....
Initially the Kinks tea room consisted of: any spare table that could be found at each venue; a pot of tea, several items of 'seen better days' crockery and some biscuits requisitioned from 'catering'.
It proved instantly popular with soundchecks being curtailed so that various Kinks could partake of the beverage that invoked memories of distant England.
Colin was/is an imaginative chap and swiftly began to improve the selection on offer and accompanying decor.
One memorable weekend the tea room had blossomed into a setting fit for a Kinks concept album cover. The table was now covered in a 'Union Jack' table cloth. A framed picture of Queen Elizabeth sat regally next to a tin of 'Dundee' cake while candles flickered softly nearby. Various selections of tea including Earl Grey were available along with the piece de resitance, 'Digestive Biscuits' for dunking.
Dave Davies and myself spent a lovely half hour there, little fingers raised as we lifted the fine china towards our lips. Something had to give...
That evening in the dressing room before the show, Ray announced to the rest of the band that he thought the road crew were spending more time putting the tea room together than setting up the equipment.
Sensing an imminent tirade I had a quick word in Colin's ear, pointing out it may prove sensible to lay off on the tea room for a while.
Next day we all turned up for soundcheck to be greeted by a
threadbare tea room. Colin informed us apologetically that they had all been so busy with the equipment there just hadn't been enough time to decorate the tea room ! !
Ray seemed satisfied and a couple of days later everything was back to normal.
Cup of tea anyone ?
