Getting from A to B has been quite a business during my years on the road.
To begin with I had a chaffeur...My Dad! Freddy drove the Haley Bros to countless Saturday night gigs in the early 1970's until (brother) Lol got his license.How we all fitted into the car with guitars and speakers crammed to the roof remains a mystery.
From there we gravitated to Vans.One memorable night in Bournemouth, while out with some girls we'd met during a summer season on the South Coast, Lol (overwhelmed with the prospect of what the evening had in store) missed a max.headroom sign and took the roof of the van clean off !
By the early 1980's I was wasting a large amount of my youth in a reliable old Ford Transit. Reliable in as much as it never got from one destination to another without breaking down.
Sleeping on the roadside saved us a fortune in hotel fees.My advice to up and coming rock musicians ? Join the AA.
The situation improved tremendously once I hooked up with The Kinks.From then on it was tour buses and stretch limos all the way.
In your average Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer tour bus you'll find 2 living rooms, both with tv, video, hi-fi etc...
8 bunk beds (Ray began writing his auto- biographical novel X-Ray in one), armchairs, microwave oven, well stocked fridge and bathroom.Essential for every hard gigging band travelling across the USA.
Limousines came in all shapes and sizes.All equipped with a mini TV that never works.This one seats 8 in the back, ideal for Kool and The Gang, a bit roomy for los Kinkos

J'ai toujours réussi à faire des affaires pour aller d'un endroit à un autre pendant mes années passées sur la route. Tout d'abord j'avais un chauffeur...
Mon père ! Freddy a conduit l'Haley Bros au début des années 1970 pour les concerts du samedi soir avant que (frère Lol) n'obtienne son permis. Je ne sais pas comment nous avons tous tenu dans la voiture avec les guitares et les speakers juchés sur le toit. Tout ceci reste un mystère.
Puis nous avons pris des camionnettes. Une nuit mémorable dans Bournemouth, tandis que nous étions avec quelques filles rencontrées durant l'été sur la Côte du Sud, Lol (préoccupé par la soirée à venir) a manqué un panneau de signalisation et a percuté le toit d'une camionnette ! Au commencement des années 1980, j'ai passé une grande partie de ma jeunesse dans une vieille Ford Transit pas très fiable. Elle n'arrivait jamais à destination sans panne. Nous avons économisé une fortune (en notes d'hôtels) en dormant sur le bord de la route. Mon conseil pour les musiciens de rock vagabonds ? Rejoignez l'AA.
La situation s'est nettement améliorée quand j'ai rejoint les Kinks. A partir de là, nous avions à chaque fois des autocars ou des limousines. Au premier étage de notre autocar Rock n' Roll Hall Famer, vous pouviez trouver 2 salles de séjour, équipées chacune de la télévision, vidéo, hi-fi, etc... 8 lits superposés (Ray a commencé à y écrire sa nouvelle autobiographie X-Ray en une seule fois), des fauteuils, un four à micro-ondes, un réfrigérateur toujours plein et une salle de bains. Essentiel pour chaque groupe en tournée, voyageant dans des conditions contraignantes à travers les ETATS-UNIS.
Nous eûmes des limousines de toutes les formes et de toutes les grandeurs. Toutes équipées d'une petite télévision qui ne fonctionnait jamais . Avec 8 places à l'arrière, idéales pour Kool and the Gang, un peu spacieuse pour los Kinkos.

Mein Vater! Freddy hat die "Haley Bros" am Anfang der siebziger Jahre für die Konzerte des Samstag Abends geführt, bevor (Bruder Lol) seinen Führerschein erhalten hat. Ich weiß nicht, wie wir alle im Auto mit den Gitarren und den Ansagern (die auf dem Dach waren) gehalten haben. All dies bleibt ein Geheimnis.
Dann haben wir Lieferwagen genommen. Eine unvergessliche Nacht in Bournemouth, während wir mit einigen Mädchen waren, die wir im Sommer auf der Küste des Südens getroffen hatten, hat Lol (beunruhigt durch den kommenden Abend), ein Verkehrszeichen versäumt und hat gegen das Dach eines Lieferwagens geprallt ! Am Anfang der achziger Jahre habe ich einen großen Teil meiner Jugend in einem sehr unverläßlicher alten Ford Transit verbracht. Das Auto kam nie von einer Stelle and die andere ohne Panne an. Wir haben ein Vermögen eingespart (in Hotelrechnungen) indem wir oft am Rand der Straße geschlafen haben. Mein Rat für die rock Musiker Landstreicher ? Treffen sie die AA. Die Lage hat sich deutlich verbessert, als ich die Kinks getroffen habe. Ab dort hatten wir jedesmal Reisebusse oder Limousine. Am ersten Stock unserem Reisebus "Rock'n Roll Hall Famer" konnten Sie 2 Aufenthaltssäle mit Fernsehen, Video, hi-fi finden, usw.... Da waren auch 8 Etagenbetter (Ray hat dort seine neue Autobiographie X-Ray in nur einem Mal begonnen zu schreiben), Sesseln, ein Mikrowellenherd, ein immer voller Kühlschrank und ein Bad. Wesentlich für jede Gruppe in Tour, die unter zwingenden Bedingungen durch die U.S.A. reist. Wir hatten Limousinen von allen Formen und von allen Größen.
